25/10/09 - Spalding 1sts 5 - Plashet
6 - Vase Cup 2nd Round
On Sunday Spalding entertained Plashet from East
Ham in London in the 2nd round of the Vase Cup. Both teams are the
leading scorers in their respective leagues so would this be a
goal fest or would they cancel each other out? The Plashet players
had great individual skills and once anywhere near the D were
likely to win a short, which they regularly did. However a
combination of great defending and over complication from the
visitors meant they squandered many a chance. Spalding certainly
upped their game from the previous day and with some short sharp
passing realised they could easily play around Plashet and it was
they that stunned the visitors when Mat Sanders opened the
scoring. It was real end to end stuff and Plashet soon equalised
before Shaun Dewing made it 2-1. Parity was again restored but
Mike Morris with a super solo effort on the stroke of half time
gave Spalding the lead.
During the interval the players were warned to
expect Plashet to up the tempo in the second half and despite the
warning were soon 3-5 down. However this seemed to galvanise the
team spirit and some fine defending from stand in backs Josh
Rowbottom and Rob Tilbrook together with some fierce determination
from James Doolan in the middle saw Spalding again draw level with
Martin Perkins from a short and Connor Stokes taking the game to
golden goal extra time. Through first Stokes and then Doolan
Spalding had chances to clinch the tie but were denied by some
excellent keeping. With time running out and a penalty flick shoot
out looking inevitable Plashet mounted once last desperate attack
and with just seconds to go drilled in a low fierce shot to break
the hearts of the Spalding players and crowd who had turned out to
watch. It was a thrilling game and a great advert for hockey and
all who took part can be proud of their performance.
