Plashet
are the VASE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 2010!
The
Men’s Senior Finals kicked off on Saturday at Bowdon HC in
Cheshire, with the Men’s Vase competition opening proceedings
under clear blue skies. Local boys South Cheshire took on Plashet,
from the Olympic borough of Newham, and both teams excellently
supported with Plashet bring a coach full of enthusiasm, to cheer
on their team on in the blistering sunshine.
The match started at a great tempo with the first goal being
scored in the second minute when a strike into the circle found
the post, and South Cheshire’s Pete Mulford found the net.
Plashet were not slow to react though, attacking the South
Cheshire circle well, eventually forcing a penalty corner. A nice
one-two effort from the top of the circle found a great first
touch from Inderjeet Singh Panesar into the back of the net.
Plashet however remained focussed, keeping the pressure on down
the baseline two minutes later, with Panesar again beating the
keeper to the ball and taking his team into the lead.
The London side were then forced to defend with South Cheshire
winning a handful of corners, as Plashet had a man sin-binned for
multiple stick tackles. In the second half the unusually high
April heat took its toll with hot tempers from both teams,
resulting in another sin-bin for Plashet’s stick tackling and
South Cheshire losing a man for breaking down play.
The game could have gone either way; with both teams creating
chances towards the close. South Cheshire did find the net but
Phil Kennerly’s effort was ruled out for a stick above shoulder
height.
However, Plashet deservedly held on to their lead, and South
Cheshire although disappointed to lose, played their part in a
nervy and high quality game to kick off the finals weekend with a
bang.
